C-section recovery tips

Being told that you have to have a c-section can be a scary thought. I know that I was terrified and upset when I found out that my son didn’t flip like my doctor thought he would. I wanted nothing more than to have a natural delivery, but sometimes there are things in life that you can’t control. Going into my c-section I had no idea what to expect and I didn’t have anyone to give me advice, so recovery was a long and painful process. Thankfully the second time around I knew what to do and recovery was a breeze. These are the eight recovery tips that I found helpful.

01 An abdominal binder will be your best friend. I didn’t use one the first time around, but the second time around I decided to give it a shot. I wore my abdominal binder consistently for the first two weeks. It applies just enough pressure to the incision that takes away some of the discomfort, so you can walk and sit a little easier.

02 Walk! I know it isn’t easy at first, but getting up and moving around will help you heal faster. With my first c-section I was scared to walk because it hurt, so I sat around and it took me twice as long to heal. The second time around I made myself walk and I can honestly say I felt better quicker!

03 Keep up on your medication. I don’t like to take pain medicine because it makes me feel foggy, but it is important that you don’t let the pain get to far ahead. If you are adamant about not taking strong pain medication at least take Tylenol and ibuprofen regularly, so you can enjoy your new baby and be comfortable. One more thing to keep up on is your stool softener.

04 Keep a pillow near by. No one ever tells you how much it hurts when you cough, sneeze or even laugh after your c-section. Applying pressure to the sight with a pillow can help dull the pain.

05 Take a shower when your doctor gives you the okay. I know that I felt better and more relaxed after a hot shower.

06 Don’t be afraid to ask for help. For a few weeks it is hard to move around and do everything you were doing before your c-section. It is important that you take it easy so you can heal and avoid complications.

07 Make sure you are getting a good amount of rest. It is okay to push yourself to get up and walk around, but don’t over do it and don’t forget to nap when baby is napping

08 Make sure you stay hydrated.Cheers to a speedy recovery!

  2. I have had 2 vaginal births. When I was in nursing school we had an OB rotation that I took care of someone post c-section I felt so bad for her because she couldn’t take care of her own baby by herself. But she had a lot of family support. I know it would bother me to have to ask for help but your health is just as important as the babies. Great list .
